I come today proving that my cause is not a lost one, because today I'm going to once again show that Yes, It Can Be Done!
The 80's in the world of anime saw a lot of influence from Mobile Suit Gundam. One of the ways it did so was by inspiring Sunrise, the studio that made Gundam to create series similar to it, like Fang of the Sun Dougram and Armored Trooper VOTOMS. Today's case comes from another of these Gundam knockoffs, Panzer World Galient.
In this case, we have a girl, Chiruru, trying to create a distraction. She's playing a sleepwalking girl who apparently sleeps nude, and while this is happening the boy of similar age is out stealing a giant robot that's patrolling the area. Once captured, Chiruru jumps for joy, then covers herself upon remembering she's naked.
You can tell that Chiruru's not being used sexually because the camera doesn't portray her as such. Full-body shots tend to diffuse sexual content since it's not focusing on a specific part of the body, and when they do focus on her it's usually when her head is in view. The scene is just using her nudity for humor, plain and simple, and it's all the better for it.
Early on, anime like this was intended for kids just as much as adults. Gundam is clearly intended for children to consume as well if the existence of kid-friendly anime that pays tribute to sections the adults watch too like Gundam Build Fighters is any indication. So it stands to reason this series would be suitable for Japanese kids as well, and they seemed to turn out fine. They knew how to handle these moments with care, and the scenes are all the better for it.
