Welcome Back To My Blog!
Well, it looks like my blog just got deleted. Soup didn't send me a message saying I got banned, and the website will still let me login. I think what just happened was a server crash that caused me to lose all my data. That's okay, I get to start over from the beginning, and with some new edits, too!
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Chris Hagen. I'm a connoisseur of film and television in all its forms. I'm also a sociologist and the two go hand in hand: I believe films and television are important because they shape the society as a whole.
Now, I'd like you to take a moment to ponder a phrase you hear in Hollywood a lot: "Sex Sells." There's also a rule in fiction that nudity is humorous and a go-to joke. Now, how do you reconcile the two? How do you decide what falls under "sex" and what falls under "humor?"
Hollywood's taken a bad approach: it's all in who you get naked. And more specifically, it's all about their gender.
For one reason or another, female nude scenes in fiction are almost universally used for humor's sake. The camera ogles her through something called the "Male Gaze," which basically means it acts as a voyeur. It focuses on her body, especially her breasts and buttocks, making them seem attractive and perfect for mating.
But male nude scenes are different. See, Hollywood operates under the idea that their main audience is straight 18-year-old males. It's the reason action movies are so popular these days. As such, no straight guy wants to see another dude naked! So the camera is used to portray the guy as UNattractive. If their butt is shown, it's to say he's ugly.
In short, you cover the eyes of someone else when they see a naked girl because it's something you don't want him to see. You cover YOUR eyes when you see a naked guy because it's something YOU don't wanna see.
Obviously this has negative effects on society: this kind of thing leads to objectification of a woman, turning them into a walking sex toy. And it leads to negative effects towards men because it says they're okay to humiliate. But no bigger a negative impact does this have on a top field of the media: animation.
Now, when most people think of animation, they tend to think of cartoons, that is to say, forms of animation primarily relying on humor that relies on unrealistic or satirical scenario played to an absurd degree. I'm sure the top three cartoon characters you name are bound to be comedic ones, like Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse, or any of The Simpsons. In addition to that, cartoons are often thought of as primarily for children due to beliefs that began in the 60's or so.
Naturally, this means cartoons will use nudity for humor's sake. In fact, in cartoons and cartoons alone young boys can even be used for nudity-based humor. Even certain countries can do full-frontal shots of boys and still have their cartoon be called humorous. Unfortunately, that doesn't extend to females, so while young boys and adult men can be stripped just fine for a joke, the same cannot happen to young girls and women, meaning they'll either never get naked or will be showing much less, the logic being that if any female nude scene is sexual (a ridiculous conceit on its own), then getting a young girl naked is sexualizing her, and no one wants to sexualize children.
In my opinion, that's a bad thing. If these cartoons are for kids, raising kids up with sexual female nudity as the only kind is only going to repeat the pattern and see women as objects. After all, when they grow up, they see any nudity as humorous, even girls! Moreover, if young girl nudity is hard to come by, then there's a risk the child will have to find it through unscrupulous methods, which might lead them to developing a sexual fetish towards children. That's something we want to avoid, but so far we haven't entertained that possibility, despite the fact that we REALLY need to.
So what this blog does is showcase examples of humorous female nudity alongside commentary that talks about the state of the industry. You might even see some commentary on adults. This blog isn't pornographic, though, but it is intended to stimulate discussion. You needn't worry about seeing a female nipple or any genitals of boys or girls, but a female butt will be common. So if you feel uncomfortable at first, that's a common feeling that'll hopefully pass as I make my case.
So we'll try this again, from the top. See you around!
